"DON'T LICK TOADS" - Orange and Black Tees

This is a reproduction of the first news article published which ignited a media frenzy of misinformation about the illicit use of toads for licking to achieve a psychedelic experience. When that misinformation entered the American consciousness and was spread by concerned parents and psychedelic enthusiasts alike, it may have actually helped protect the Sonoran Desert Toad populations from human caused harm by obscuring the actual ways in which someone might harvest and consume the psychoactive venom. Any brave soul attempting to lick toads would have most likely ingested bufotoxins which causes at best nausea and at worst cardiac arrest and death. Anyone hearing about that experience would probably be very adverse to trying it themselves.

There is a sad irony that the more people are made aware of the abuse and harm caused by harvesting toad venom, that awareness leads for more people seeking out the toads, causing more harm and abuse.

Maybe the best way to protect the toad populations itself is to go back to telling people "DON'T LICK TOADS!"
